Default Removing front brake splash guards

So I want to replace the splash guards on the front brakes, but in order to do so I would have to pull the hubs to get them off, which requires a press. Couldn't I just cut off a piece of the guard at the front where it's the narrowest and slide it out from behind the hub? Especially because I would be pulling another pair of guards at the pick and pull.

What vehicle are you driving?

Put that information in your signature, so we don't have to ask.

I do have it as my signature, but my initial entry was sent from my phone. Weird that it doesn't show it on my phone's interface. It's a '98 LX 4-door, 2.3L VTEC/4AT.

One possible problem is whether you can get to the bolts that fasten the splash shield. Not sure but it looks like the hub will be in the way.

Yeah, and looking at the procedure in the service manual shows that the splash guard's inner diameter is right around the hub, and the screw holes are too close to it. *sigh* Guess I'll need a press and about $100 for a pair of steering knuckles from the junkyard.

You shouldn't need new knuckles, unless something's wrong with yours (beyond the bad splashguards).

Remove the big nut on the axle, and the upper, lower, & steering balljoints. Carry the knuckle with hub installed to a shop. That way it's probably not very expensive JUST for the press work. Your car won't be taking up a lift at the shop. (You would need another car to get to the shop & back)

But be prepared to get new wheel bearings. Pressing the hub out will often pull the bearing apart (destroying it).

Keeping your same knuckles, you won't disturb the alignment. (unless you need an alignment anyway)
