Default Revs loud at 2500 rpm

I have a '96 accord lx, 2.2 4cyl, manual. When I hit about 2400 rpm the engine gets real loud (almost like an exhaust leak). Then once I pass about 2700 rpm the noise dies down to the normal hum of the motor. It's been doing this for at least 70,000 miles (now has over 200,000). When I rev it when the tranny is disengaged, it still gets a little loud, but not as bad. Makes me think maybe tranny related. But it happens in every gear too.

One of my friends has a similar model and he said his does the same thing. Is this a common honda defect? Any ideas what causes this?

Thanks much

the most common complaint that matches your year/problem, would be the 'B' pipe flex connection just behind the oil pan.
maybe new springs and bolts would help ??
