Stupid question. I've got a '97 Accord LX. The tach went out, and I've got a new instrument cluster to put in, but I need to add a few K to it before I put it in. I've ran some searches, but haven't found anything helpful. So, how do you do it?

 

you don't .... the car will have an odometer discrepancy on the title. There's nothing that you can do about it. A friend's EP3 has the same issue because Honda screwed up his gas guage while fixing a dash light. It took 2 months to get the part and now he has the discrepancy which will appear on CarFax ... it sucks, but that's life.

your adding to the new tach? thats not illegal if you are to be putting the mileage the same as car is currently....however, if you are back rolling, thats illegal.........at least I know you can roll forward without breaking the little tab on tachs

 

Is the 97 a wheel type or electronic tach? I never said it's illegal, just that you're not supposed to be able to do it, otherwise I'd imagine the dealer would've fixed my friend's.

 

Not sure about the type. Yeah, I need to roll forward, not back. Had the infamous dead-tach syndrome. Also working on the nearly infamous dook lock acuator on the driver's side [8D] Last year around this time was my first experience with the ignitor. Never knew the little bugger had so many quirks. Then again, it is ten years old, so I ain't complainin'

You can do it with a small screwdriver but it takes a VERY long time. The previous owner of my car had to replace the speedo so she kept the old one in order to show actual mileage. And the odometer discrepency may never show up on that car. I'm not sure about other states but in MT any car over 9 years old doesn't require you to report the mileage so the discrepency never gets reported. As for how to change it you have to look at the little wheel and slowly click it over with a screwdriver, it takes about a minute to roll it over one mile so you're going to be there a while. Personally I would probably just do what the previous owner of my car did. Keep the old speedo/odo and when/if you go to sell it then show the new owner the old tach.

 

You can place the original speedometer into the new cluster.

Honda will not roll the speedometer, because it is against company policy. Search the web for speedometer repair shops and find out how much they will charge to roll the speedometer, and what legal paperwork needs to be submitted as well.

 

try rigging the screwdriver or whatever device is used to roll it forward into a drill press or hand drill. that way you can do it fast.

 

i had to put a new speedo / odo in my 94. i drove for about 3 mos with a non-functioning odo. no discrepancy on the carfax.
