Post Shuts off while driving

2001
3.0L 24-valve VTEC V6
105k mileage

Problem:
My car shuts off while driving. The frequency that it does it seems to be once every 2-3 months. Its very intermittent, and unpredictable. Its probably happened 5 times throughout the 2012 year. Its shut off completely when I was driving on the highway, once at a stop light at a complete stop, or just driving in general. When it shuts off all the dashboard lights are illuminate, RPM's and speedometer drops to 0. So sometimes it shuts off while driving, and will restart as if nothing happened(while driving). A few times its shut down completely and has taken 2-3 minutes to start back up.

What Ive done:
Ive taken it to the dealer and they couldn't find anything wrong using the diagnostic tester. Ive done a complete tune up (plugs, air filters, etc). Ive done a ignition switch check, bases on a google search ( physical shaking the key in the ignition) check out good, I even check the ignition switch properly using a multimeter, and it checkout good (checked on 29 Dec 2012) . ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS ?

My daughters 94 Accord had very similar symptoms. It started intermittently and gained frequency. I did all the checks, ignition, relay, fuel pump. It turned out to be my ECM . See if there is a factory manual available and there possibly will be a flowchart of things to check. Ours got to the point it wouldn't start so it was easier to diagnose. Oh, and my D4 light stayed on steady, probably not applicable on an 01.

Call your dealership and find out if the ignition switch recall was done on your car.

Any update on this issue? I'm having a similar issue and wonder if it may be a loose or corroded ground. Recently repaired the thermostat housing and have had other similar (but not exactly the same) issues resolved by cleaning intake (mixture way off), and replacing alternator (bad voltage regulator). Neither the intake or the alternator shutting down/running rough issues happened while driving like this current issue.

I've had a recommendation to check grounds. I remember washing off the area under the thermostat housing after repairing/replacing the housing. I might suspect that I've caused some corrosion at a ground in that area.

Additionally, I'll see no EDC's after the events. This led me to an electrical issue - possibly the ECU, but I'd imagine I'd have some codes randomly appearing and/or rough running after the power off/on if the source was ECU. However, it comes back and begins running again just about as quickly as it "shuts off".

This thread is close to 12 years old, so you may not get a response. I'd probably start a new thread on your specific issues to get some suggestions.

With the car randomly shutting off while driving could be caused by a flaky ignition switch or maybe a poor ground. You almost have to chatch the car in the act of stalling to figure out the issue, as your root cause could be different. Check over your prevous work for a missing ground/good connections.

If the car cuts off without any warning it is losing spark. If it stumbles first it is a fuel problem.
