Need some assistance on a slight hesitationand slightly rough idle. I just inherited to car from my daughter and trying to get it straight. Alist of stuff that has been done byHonda dealer or indepent Shop; new injectors, new cap, plugs, wires,new cat, new fuel filter/air filter. None of the work was done for the hesitation problem. I checked for vacuum leaks andthe compression. This most noticable under load (up a hill).

Clogged EGR ports?

 

00AccordLX5spd: The EGR was the problem. It tested good with vacuum, but was carboned up upon removal. I cleaned it and voila. Thanks for the help!

 

To test for plugged up EGR ports; heve the engine fully warmed up
one way is to reach your finger under the top of the EGR valve and manually lift it, with the engine at idle,the engine should stumble and die.
another test is to heve the engine fully warmed up and hold the brake while in drive, bring the RPM up thru 1700, if the engine stumbles in the range of 1500-1700 RPM while powerbraking it is a sign of plugged EGR ports.

I didn't do the power brake test, but I plugged the vacuum line and used a pump to apply vacuum to the EGR and the motor stumbled when I applied pressure. I take that as the EGR is working properly? When I removed the EGR for inspection it was carboned up pretty good, but the plunger moved some freely. After I scraped the carbon from the EGR it was moving freely and looked pretty clean. I see that cleaning the ports is a time consuming job, is there some kind of preventive maintenance that can be done on the EGR ports?
