smoke from under the dash
I was driving my 1991 acoord ex yesterday when i started noticing that the tach and speedometer gauges would fall to zero and jump back. Shortly after this i could smell that their was something electrical burning and could start to see smoke coming out of the dash just above the steering column. I pulled over and turned the car off. It didn't die. I looked it over to make sure nothing was on fire and tried to start it back up. It would crank over just fine and act like it was gonna start but would die everytime as I released the key. I found that there was a box under the dash in the general area of the smoke that turned out to be the cruise control module. I took it apart and found that there are several components that are burnt. So my question is if the cruise control module doesn't work will it cause the car not to run or should I be looking for another problem?

RE: smoke from under the dash
Are you sure you identified the source of the smoke? The keyswitch assy is very near cruise controland has been known to overheat and burn (not disastrously to my knowledge). Additionally, the loss of start control (on and off) also suggests keyswitch problem. Pull column lower cover and examine the keyswitch for indications of burning.
If you're sure the cruise control is the problem, it can be removed and car operated w/o this component for sure.
good luck

RE: smoke from under the dash
I know that the module is burnt. It smells like it is and I took it apart and found components that are burnt. I'm not sure if it is the actual source of the smoke or not. My cruise control was working fine before, wasn't using it at the time though. I will examine the keyswitch(ignition) today. Thanks.

Report your findings when your sure and post it so everyone knows if it happens to them...
