Default Speedo stopped working, got this code

So last night my speedo stopped working completely. I got code 4 and code 17 from my cel. Also the SRS light blinks when I check the codes. What does this mean?

I know code 4 is crank position sensor and code 17 is VSS. Does this just mean my VSS is bad or what?

Come on Tyler, we expect more from you around here.

I am sure you searched around on the board and found that seeing if the CC still works is the first step.

I am sure you did that already, so does the CC still work?

Does the CEL come on while driving?

Have you checked the connector going to the VSS (top of trans near firewall)

Have you taken the VSS out and cleaned it yet?

Since I am sure you have done all that (cause you are in school for this stuff) R&R of the VSS would be the next step.

R&R the VSS (remove and replace)

I do not know why we tell people to clean the VSS, I have not seen one person where that actually did anything.
