Moved to your own thread.

If cruise control is working, then VSS is not the problem. Suggest checking for codes anyway. Perhaps a trans code doesn't set CEL. If no code, then speedometer circuit board is suspect.

good luck

I did check the VSS according to my hanes manual with the continuity test and then measuring the voltage while turning one front wheel with the other blocked and it failed both tests. However I have noticed on the highway that the speedometer comes alive, although in jumpy increments, at around 77-80. I dont want to replace the sensor if I dont have to. And if someone could tell me how to start a new thread I would be greatful. THanks

Start a new thread by clicking on the "New Thread" button in selected forum such as General Tech. You can't do this from w/i a open existing thread,...at least I don't know how.

VSS are relatively inexpensive, and a bit of PIA to replace due to one bolt being very difficult to reach. Check replacements from ebay or rockauto. It should cost around $10-$15.

Check diy forum for guidance.

good luck

If you're real cheap (that's me!), you can remove VSS, open the sensor (3 screws), clean and relube the ball bearing and sensor. Clean the sensor face of grease accumulation and apply a modest amount of silicone grease. Reinstall and hope this cures the problem.

The problem w/ this strategy is the difficultly of removing/reinstalling the sensor. The bolt nearest the engine is devilish to remove/install. If your sensor electronics are faulty, you get to do this job again. For a $15 sensor, hardly seems worth taking a chance.

good luck

Thank you for the tips on both starting a thread and VSS. MY speedometer starts to kick on around 75-80 but is very jump and of course the odometer starts working so it might just need to be re-vamped. I think I am going to try that first as I love car electronics (5 years spent doing custom car audio and video) and then 3yrs as an Electronics Technician for one of our government law enforcement agencies. Thanks again guys
