Default Squeeling Belt

Well when I bought my car It didn't make a sound from the belts. But the same day I bought it, was changing the oil and the funnel slipped and spilt oil on the timing belt cover, and the other belt(sorry the name slips me at the moment). Anyways every since then it has been squeeling right when I first start it up, but if i give it a quick rev to 3000, or start driving right away it goes away except for the odd time it will when at a stop again. It only seems to do it when its cold out. So I'm not sure if this is caused by the cold, something else or the oil that spilt on it because the day I got the car was the day I changed the oil so I don't know if it was doing it before this or not. What could it be?

I'm guessing it's the external drive belts (alternator, PS pump, etc). The timing belt has teeth so it can't usually squeak.

Catch it when it's squeaking (have someone start it while you watch up front). Spray some water on the beltto make it stop. Obviously that won't fix it, but it'll showwhether it'sbelt noise. Then replace the belts.

Decide about tension based on TENSION. If it's too loose tighten it. Don't tighten it simply because of noise.

As the belt gets old, it gets harder & more slippery. You CAN make the noise go away by over-tightening the belt. Then we'll be waiting for you to post about how to replace the bearings in your PS pump& alternator.

Belt dressing will probably work, but it's only temporary. Spraying with water makes the noise go away for a couple minutes. Belt dressing might make it go away for a few months.

Also remember that the alternator itself can squeal. That means it is on it's way to the graveyard.Make sureit is a belt that's squealing and not the alternator itself.
