Default SRS light is on in my 2000 Honda Accord EX coupe

The other day my SRS light came on. Does anyone know how serious this is and what I need to do to correct it and how much it may cost? I've never had one come on before and I'm kind of worried about it.

thank you,

Check your warranty booklet. For awhile (not sure if this includes 2000) Honda warrantied SRS for the "life of the car".

Thank you, I'll check that out. It would be just my luck it's not covered.

If Honda doesn't cover, you need the SRS DTC. See following link to procedure to extract code/s.

good luck

  1. SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) components (e.g, airbags, cable reel, impact sensors, OPDS (occupant position detection system), etc.) never had lifetime warranties.
  2. Due to a class action settlement, there was an extended warranty for the OPDS (occupant position detection system) to 10 years or 157,000 miles, whichever occurs first. 10 years would have passed now, so the extended warranty would be effectively over. (Honda TSB 06-009)
  3. The 2000 Accord had a limited warranty for a seat belt that fails to function properly is covered for the useful life of the vehicle. Seat belts are not considered SRS.
  4. Some auto parts stores have OBD-II readers/scanner to read Honda ABS/SRS trouble codes(s). Some do not have the capability to read Honda ABS/SRS trouble code(s) In the U.S., many parts stores will read the codes for free. In California, the parts store employees usually cannot read the code(s) for you (supposedly, some law); but, can rent the tool with a deposit (it is free and you will get your deposit back if you return the tool undamaged).

And my guess, the drivers seat belt is the issue.....many have cleaned it with WD40 and a rag and life is good. Again this is a GUESS, as stated you need to get the codes.
