Default starter motor replacement - 95 accord

Hello guys:

1995 Honda accord / lx / 4dr / at / 4cyl
I just pulled the starter motor for replacement.
My question is.... Is there any difference between a dealer remanufactured starter and an aftermarket remanufactured starter? the starter from Honda is about $300 and the aftermarket is about$100.
I have always been an advocate for using OEM whenever possible but here the price difference is just too much.
Any opinions?
thanks

I don't know who rebuilds the auto parts store's starters vs the dealership, so I am not certain about the quality of the rebuilds.

If the solenoid and contacts are worn out, then you can replace those for <$30. Does the starter make one loud click then not turn the engine? Toyota sells a starter rebuild kit that works with Hondas (NipponDenso makes both the starters). Just do a google search and you should find it.

Default re starter motor replacement

before i pulled the starter it seemed like it was just getting weak and sluggish almost like a weak battery(battery was new) eventually it just died totally, there was no click or noise at all when turning the key. i wacked the starter with the end of a wooden dowel and hammer and that brought it back to life just for one start only.

i would try to replace the brushes/solinoid rebuild etc. but i do not know what the exact problem is?

thanks

Hitting the starter and getting it back to life sounds like the starter solenoid/contacts are worn out.

Do you have a local shop that rebuilds starters and alternators?

If so,you can try them.I use mine and they have fixed any problem I ever had with my other Vehicles. They bench test and do a tear down, and always found the problems, fixed them and repaired them to like new specs.

Now,the aftermarket starters are cheaper than OEM and my work fine or may not.Thats up to you to try it out.Sometimes the Lifetime warranty is good, but they dont always last as long.

With my local starter and alternator shop,I had an alternator rebuilt for 75 bucks with all new bearings, regulator and misc parts, and a starter fixed for 50...and they have not failed since, and its been a long time, over 2 years or so,and still going strong.

If you have a bad solenoid, the starter shop will still take apart the housing and check the insides, and see what you may need. Many times, the brushes and other internal parts are on the way out with old cars.
