Thanks Rob and Jim. And thanks for the extra info about the grounds/connections. That makes sense what you are saying about current and a disconnected ground shorting something else out.

Another just curious question: If you bang on the starter and it starts, that's probably a sign of carbon build up. Instead of replacing the starter could you just clean the carbon off? I've seen some videos on this, but is there a reason that people don't do this more often (instead of doing a full replacement)?

Personally I just rebuild mine when it starts happening. The kits are around $30. I've never bought a new starter.

It is possible to clean the contacts. Just a matter of whether it's worth your time or not.

I think availability of a starter repair kit varies a lot depending on year/model or what kind of starter you have. If you can't find a kit with motor brushes, your alternative is a new (or rebuilt) starter. And then there are some people who just decide to replace the whole thing because they don't feel like dismantling it.

Thanks for all these replies. Good to know for future reference. It was the solenoid this time, so for the best that I replaced the whole thing. Also I guess repairing the starter would be a question of how much time you have to work on it. Appreciate your alls help.

Where do you find kits for rebuilding? I've got a genuine Honda starter I'd like to rebuild for my wife's car. It's 20 years old (a 2000 Accord w/2.3L 4 cylinder.
