Default Temp gauge intermittent - 98 accord Lx

New member here. Glad I found this forum. Im
hoping you all can assist me with a water temp gauge issue on my 98 accord.

Every time I hit a sizable bump on the road , my temp gauge quits working. I have to “smack” the dash where the temp gauge is located to get it working again.

What can be causing this and how do I go about repairing it. In my opinion, I’m thinking “loose connection” or bad solder joint.

Anyone have any similar issue / experience ??

Thanks in advance

I think you are on the right track. You can pull the cluster from your car after removing some trim pieces. Look on youtube on how to remove the cluster on a 98-02 accord as each year has different items that need to be removed.

The temp gauge is connected electrically to the main board by some press contacts, so it isn't plugged in. I'd remove the temp gage. Look on youtube on how to disassemble the gauge. Clean the contacts with a q-tip and electrical contact cleaner. or a pencil eraser.. Look at the solder joints on the temp gauge and main board for bad/cracked joints and repair as needed.

Default Thanks PAhonda

Thank you.
I’ll do as you advise. I’m loving this forum already.
I definitely need it working. I have a water pump about to die. So I really want to stay on top of the temp.
Hopefully tackle the water pump/timing belt in the next day or two.
it drives me crazy when my gauges don’t work.
I really appreciate the help and will reply with a follow up !
