Tight Belts??

Tight Belts??
So I just got through changing both drive belts on my '91 Accord. The start up squeal is gone, but now I'm getting a sound that is best described as "rolling metallic". I believe it is coming from the PS pump, and not the alternator. Would this be an indication that I overtightened the new belt? If so, will it stretch out a little as it gets broken in?? I was under the assumption that you wanted the belts a little snug at first, so when they stretched, they would be at proper operating tension. Thanks for any advice.

Don't over tight the belt, it could take out pulley/tensioner bearings. Also check for bad bearing. That happened to my 01 sentra, the guy before me over tighten the belt, took out both tensioners and alternator bearings.

Overtightening is not good for reasons pointed out. If you can't depress belt 1/2" w/ moderate (20-30 lb force) at the midpoint of the belt, it's too tight. It takes some experience to judge "tightness" but the above guide is accurate enough.

Agreed, if you could twist the belt 1/2 turn at the midpoint of the belt with your finger and not a pair of channel lock then it should be good. Other than that then it will be too tight or too loose. It will take a long time for the belt to be stretch. I'd seen guy broke the crank pulley because he had the belt too tight. I would try loosing the belt a little bit if you think it's too tight.

Twisting 90deg sounds like how you want a timing belt (with teeth), not a PS belt.
Still, I agree it's not good to leave it too tight. Loosen it some, then after it stretches THEN you can re-adjust. It's not as if it's overly difficult to adjust.
