There's stories of guys supporting the crank-holding-tool against the ground, then using extensions, supports, & eventually a 4-foot pipe. Leaning hard against the pipe, when it finally came loose with a big crack, he did a face-plant into the dirt. The crank-pulley bolt is really tough.

I think the admonition not to use an air impact tool applies to re-installing the crankshaft bolt. Lots of folks do this however, but I never have.

I still think air impact is the safest and easiest method to remove the bolt. I don't see any way you could harm the transmission case. The engine is not coupled to the transmission when in park.

The Acura MDX has an differnt, and IMO, improved bolt tightening procedure. Tighten to 47 ft-lbs, mark the bolt and then mark the pulley at the next CW corner of bolt (60-degrees). Turn the bolt mark to align w/ the pulley mark to complete tightening. On MDX it took all the "torque" I could muster w/ a cheater pipe and restraint tool holding to turn the final 60 degrees. It's a 19mm bolt like all Honda's but don't know if that procedure could be substituted for Accords.

good luck

You can purchase a streaming video on how to replace the timing belts, water pump, seals from EricTheCarGuy for $10.99. I bought it and will be doing mine this weekend.

Thanks for the info, but active links to selling sites are against the rules (unless they're sponsors).

Default crank bolt

I have experienced using a rounded tip chisel around the crank pully washer. Hold the chisel in the 12 o'clock, 2 o'clock, 4, 6, 8, and ten o'clock positions. Hit it hard a couple of times in these positions . It tends to free the surface tension caused by the washer. Sometimes a half inch impact with the shortest 19mm impact socket possible will break it loose. Lower the engine as much as possible to get to it. ie. take the t-belt motor mount loose and the four long bolts holdind the front cross member under the radiator. The drivers side all the way out and the passenger side just loose. That will give you several extra inches of room. It also makes it easyer to remove lower timing cover.
