Tinted Windows Law
Hi,
I bought a 2007 Honda Accord from a dealer in Chicago 2 days back. The car had tinted windows. The sales person mentioned it as a big plus. I bought the car and today found out that in IL it is not legal to have tinted windows on the driver and passenger doors in the front.
The dealer has been avoiding my calls. Any suggestions? Is changing the windows the only option?

I live in Champaign now, but don't know the laws here. Are the windows factory tinted?
I remember something about buying a car from a dealership with tinted windows, but that was in PA. I don't remember it exaclty and am not sure if it was b.s., because I never owned a car with tinted windows.
You might want to call a different local dealer (toyota, etc) to find out about buying cars with tinted windows, because all the car dealers have to follow the same IL laws.

Have you found out from the highway safety department (or the Dept of public safety...whatever they call it there)? They would not be able to make cars with factory tint if it is not legal. I suggest calling the highwaysafety dept.and explaining your situation to them. They will be able to tell you how much tint is legal.
If yours is not legal, all you have to do is remove the tint.....not the windows. Tint is simply a film that covers the glass.
If you find out from the highway safety dept that the tint you have is not legal, I suggest you go down to the dealership that sold you the car and tell them you expect them to remove the illegal tint that is on the windows of the car they sold you.

I agree with 00LX5spd. But, I went to 2 different Highway State Patrol posts and got 2 different answers. I asked one of them for the law in writing, that is what I went with when I got mine done. I also carry a copy of it in my glove box since all jurisdictions are not on the same page.

It's illegal to have anything darker than 50 on any window here in Minnesota. When I do tint my windows it will probably be 45/35/20 front to rear or 35/35/20 or 35/35/35, depending.
