Default Tips for proper amount of tension on timing belt

I just finished replacing all the belts on my 92 LX manual w/ ac and I heard some belt slapping when I first started it. I managed to tame it a little by removing the tensioner nut and re positioning then tightening back down, but it's still there. I'm running it with the timing covers off as well as all acessory belts and there is still some slack in the timing belt ( enough to make a slight noise, not as much as before) In fact, I don't know if I would even notice the belt noise if the top timing cover was on. If it helps, the slack seems to be mainly on the slack side? There is no temporary bolt holding the timing belt tensioner on, I took that out. Anyone have any tips?
