Default Trans-axle leaking oil BAD!

Was just going to change oil on my daughter 2000 accord. I jumped in it to take it for a little ride to warm it up it made a "clunk" when I put it into reverse which concerned me. Took it for a drive and could feel / hear a slight roughness to the drive......

Put it on ramps, crawled underneath and noticed the transmission and bottom of car wet with red fluid. DARN!!!!!

Grabbed the axle shaft on the drivers side and it will move back and forth a good 1/4 inch. The other side does too but not as bad.

Anyone have an idea what the diagnosis will be????? Its a sure thing that the bearings / seals are out for the shafts......?

Do you think the tranny will still be OK? Any ideas on repair costs?????

Thanks in adavance

Is the driver’s side axle seated in the trans and if it isn't have you had work done on your vehicle lately.

this is a real common problem on the 98-02 accords.
Differential bearings are tapered roller bearings.
The worst thing about it; all the metal flakes go through out the entire trans.
Here's what they look like when ya open up the trans;

Sooooooo does this mean that it is usually a complete tranny replacement??????? From the little research I've done that could mean up to $3500. Geeeez the car is hardly worth that.............Maybe get her a different car and see if I can take on this job myself ----- or sell it for parts.
