Default transmission fluid specification

My brother has an '88 Accord Lxi, and it is low on automatic transmission fluid. The Haynes manual specifies Dexron II ATF, but we can't find it anywhere. Is Dexron III OK or should he get the genuine Honda ATF from a dealer? Thanks.

Dexron III will work but the Honda Z-1 ATF is a superior product.
WHY is the trans low on fluid is also a good question.

this is just personal experience but Z-1 ATF gave me an awful gear grind, since then I have started using AMSOIL ATF and my tranny is running better than it has since Ive owned it.
