Question transmission problems

hello all. first time here and from what i have seen looks pretty informative.

tried to find something similar to my problem, but was taking to long to search.

i have a 1992 Honda Accord EX with 292,000 miles on it. I bought it used and it had 220k then. for about a month now i have noticed my automatic transmission shifts real hard. i pretty much baby it when i take off because if i dont then when it shifts from 1st to 2nd it pretty much makes the car shutter and makes a clunking sound(dont know how else to describe it lol).

Someone suggestion that i needed to have it serviced. change filter and screen, gasket ect. so my question is, should i service it?? do i have to take it to a shop? what is involved when doing this? do i have to take apart the whole car? just drop trany? please any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

I'd try drain & fill fluid first since it's so easy and not much $$.
Probably x2 since sounds like your AT hasn't been serviced in a while,
but others here are more experienced at AT's.

After that, check the throttle control cable going the the trans for proper movement and adjustment.

Also check the motor/trans mounts.

Check for transmission codes (see DiY forum same for trans as engine codes). Some trans codes don't cause D4 or S light to flash.

good luck
