Default Troubleshooting Hesitant Throttle

Hi, this is my first post here at the Honda Accord forums and I hope someone can give me some tips or ideas as to what may be wrong. Here's what I have...

2000 Honda Accord 2.3 EX
Standard Transmission
4 Door

It's been 'acting up' over the past little while and I'm trying to pinpoint the problem. Since the engine light was on, I scanned it with my scantool (Auterra) and came up with a couple codes. P0170 and P0171. Either one of those or another came up originally that was described as the car was running too lean.

What happens is this..... In 1st gear, as I start off, the car can almost completely die if I keep on the accelerator. In order to get rolling, I have to "feather" the pedal.....slightly letting off and giving it just a very small amount of gas to get up to speed to switch to 2nd gear. It doesn't do this all the time, but probably the majority of the time. I've been told that if the problem was the fuel pump, at any time while driving, if I "floor it", it will just completely die.....but it doesn't do that. In top gear, to pass...it won't pass very strong, but it doesn't completely die when we press on the gas to pull out and pass at highway speed.

To try and solve the problem, over the past month or so I've done some research and have replaced a few things. After discovering that there isn't a fuel filter, I replaced the fuel screen in the tank. Shortly after that I replaced the MAP sensor. I also just recently replaced the front O2 sensor. None of this helped so far.

If there's anybody out there with some ideas as to what may be wrong, or something else I could check, please let me know.....it would be greatly appreciated !!!

B

I get a similar code on my truck, but I don't get hesitation. Fuel consumption is higher than normal though. I have been told that one of the possible cause is a vacumn leak somewhere between the MAF sensor and the engine. Usual suspects would be Vacumn hoses, gaskets, or rubber "O" rings.

The fuel pressure regulator arrived and I replaced it. Voila......fixed the problem !!! Very relieved, but instead of replacing potential parts to find the problem, I could've troubleshooted a little better to find the exact problem. This would've made the process a lot cheaper, however, my total bill was probably still much cheaper than taking it in to shops around here.

Hope this helps any future people with similar problems.
P0171 - System Too Lean
Hesitant Running....especially in 1st through 3rd gear with relatively good mileage and almost 100% operation at highway speeds.

Thanks.

I did the same thing (few years ago)with an '89 Saab.

IfI had bought a fuel pressure gauge it would cost more than a new FPR. But then I would have had a fuel pressure gauge for my toolbox...

I just bought the FPR & found that it was NOT the problem in my case. FPR for that car didn't cost a great deal of money. Still, I found the problem & fixed it anyway so it was all good in the end.
