Question Trying to sell my "fixer upper" 94 Accord

I have 1994 Accord LX 4 door sedan I'm trying to sell. It has a lot of problems that need to be repaired. I posted an ad on craigslist for $1000. A lot of people are interested. I'm also thinking of selling it to carmax to avoid the hassle. Could you guys look at the problems listed below and tell me if $1000 is too low to ask for this car? The car runs good. It has 204,000 miles. Heat and air work fairly well. It has like new tires. The exterior has faded paint and a couple of small dents. The interior has some stains on the cloth. The car makes a bad grinding sound from the front wheels when driving.

Here are the problems that a mechanic told me about:

-Both CV axles are bad (torn boots)
-Both upper ball joints are bad
-Both outer tie rod ends bad
These three items will cost $1200 to fix from this mechanic

Additional problems:
-Oil pan gasket leaks
-Both sway bar links are bad (Dry)
-Front lower engine mount broken
-Both front hub bearings are bad
-Rack and pinion leaks
-Rack boot is torn open
-Rear brake shoes recommend clean and adjust
-Power steering fluid is bad
-Brake fluid is bad
-All 4 struts and mounting plates are bad
-Valve cover gasket leaks
-Recommend PCV valve
-Recommend fuel induction service
-Blinker socket is bad (replacing bulb did not work)

I would say $1000 is too much. You are looking at a low estimate of $2000 to fix all of that stuff. Probably more like $3000. I sold my 95 accord for $1000 and all it needed was brakes. If I were looking to buy your car I would only pay in the $500-800 range. Also what area of the country your in seems to change the value. For instance they seem to be worth more down south than up north from my experiences.

Thanks live2rice. I'm in Georgia by the way. I was thinking $1000 is too low because I got 30 emails in 2 hours from craigslist even after I listed the problems. I deleted the ad to research more.

Aw that is why, they do seem to be worth more down in the south, so maybe $1000 is fair. You could always try asking more. Plus with craigslist most people ask more than they actually want knowing people will negotiate.

Craigs List buyers are no indication of value, most are not serious buyers.
It's a $600-$800 car max, maybe more with extra fine body/interior.
But definitely get all you can!

Biggest problem I've had w/ private sales are failure of buyers to follow through w/ titlle transfer. They simply buy the car and keep driving, probably w/o insurance.

I insist on a copy of their driver's license and execution of a two bill of sales' ( in addition to title signature and hand-over). I then file a notice of sale w/ state of TX to let them know I no longer own the vehicle. This helps w/ pinheads get traffic tickets, toll both tickets, parking tickets assigned to license plates that remain in my name.

It might be worth a lower price to sell to CarMax.

good luck

Thanks brayner and TexasHonda. I was thinking that a mechanic could buy this car and repair it cheaply. Then he could flip the car and make some money.
I am really nervous about selling on craigslist. I am going to take it to carmax tomorrow and see what they will offer.

I took the car to Carmax. I sold it to them for $700. They said it was in good shape except for the fading paint, the popping axles, and the high mileage. I think it was a good deal. I was hoping to get $800 on craigslist. It was so easy at Carmax. It only took an hour. Thanks for the help guys.

Glad you were able to get what you wanted for it, sounds like carmax does make it easy. It takes days or even weeks to deal with private buyers.
