VSS question
Hey guys,
It seems that when I first run my car when it is cold (like 0-30 F) that the speedo isn't right. I will be on a 60 MPH 4 lane, it feels like I am going way too fast and I am flying past almost everyone on the road, and the speedo says 55MPH. Or on a 35 MPH 2 lane and at 30 MPH I am on people's rear ends. After the car has fully warmed up things seem to be normal. I had the wife follow me the other day in her car after it was warmed up and the speedo was spot-on.
Is it possible that the VSS is affected bycold tempsand is not sending the proper signals to the gauge cluster? I'm puzzled by this one.

Try the test again like I said when your car is cold. Then you'll have a goodmeasurement of what's going on.
I thought the VSS creates a pulsed signal, & the speedometer 'counts' the pulses. Maybe when it's cold some of the pulses are weak so they don't get picked up?

Yeah, that's the next test on the list. I just don't see how temperature could affect pulse without seeing erratic behavior from the speedo, which I don't see. It just feels like I am going much faster than what it says, and everyone around me is driving WAY too slow!
That's my point. So far it's a "FEELING". If itwas a MEASUREMENT we could take it seriously.
I don'town a '93 so I don't really know the gory details of the speedometer's signal processing. I can say that I haven't seen tons of people complaining about this happenning to their cars.

If you have highways w/ mile post markers, time how many mileposts + tenths on trip odometer are accumulated in 6 minutes (1/10hr) w/ cruise at 60, multiply by ten and you have good estimate of mph average during the 6 min test. This assumes mile post markers are accurate and odometer is reasonably accurate for last tenths of mile covered past last MP.
I doubt VSS is involved, as missing pulses would be indicated by rapidly changing speedometer. When I had a failing VSS, I had this symptom intermittently. Always the CEL would come on when this happened.
good luck
