Default Water in brake lights

I love my '98 Accord EX, but recently (just a year or so ago), I noticed that whenever it rains or after a trip to the carwash, water pools in my brake lights. Then, the next time I open my trunk, the water exits from the inside of the trunk (from the hole where the electrical wires for the lights are). I have not been in any accidents, and no damage has been done to my car whatsoever. I don't know what to do except keep a bucket in my trunk and catch the water. Does anyone else have this problem? Any "simple" fixes? Thanks!!!!!

Default RE: Water in brake lights

There are two possibilities; the foam gasket that seals the lens assembly to the body is leaking, or the lens assy has an seam that has opened. I've had both happen on earlier model accords.

Foam gasket is readily avialable and easy to install.

To fix the open seam, I drilled a drain hole in the bottom of the lens to allow trapped water to drain, or you can purchase a replacement lens.

Diagnosing which is your problem is tricky. I replaced the foam gasket and found I still had a leak, so after some water trials, I decided the lens seam must be open, and drilled the hole.

good luck
