1998 Honda Accord won’t start.Came home from work on a Friday and tried to start it up a week later and nothing.Car sounds like it wants to turn over but doesn’t.Replaced the spark plugs and no luck.Checked the distributor cap and it seems fine.Fuel pump is pumping. We do smell gas after trying to crank the engine several times.Any thoughts or advice would be helpful.

Just want to make sure we understand the problem. Is the starter motor spinning the engine and the engine won't run on its own? Or does nothing happen when you turn the key?

Have you checked for codes? Do you have a spark tester?

When I turn the key, it sounds like the engine wants to start but doesn't. The engine never starts spinning. Sorry for responding so late. I do not know why I said an Accord as my wife's car is a Civic so your group may not be able to help me anyway. I would appreciate any help or advice. I don't know how to check the codes. We replaced the spark plugs and they are firing.

Maybe your battery is weak? In other words, the starter is turning the engine, but it is not strong enough to get the engine going. Have you checked the battery terminals for corrosion? If they are clean, then try jump starting the car.

Is this a 98 Civic?

Still confused on what is wrong, because we are using different terms.

When I turn the key to the start my car, the starter spins the engine. When the engine fires up (runs on its own), I release the key.

So is your starter spinning the engine, or will the engine not run on its own?
