Default 93 honda accord heating issues...

Ok..so I just bought 93 Honda Accord Ex with 182K miles for my wife. Prior to purchase, everything was in working order. Well, now i have overheating problem. My mechanic has advised that i changed the radiator, which he did along with Temp guage. I got the car back and notice that temp is still rising little bit more than 3/4 when idle and then drops back to the middle when it's driving. Took it back to the mechanic and he did see temp going up then coming down. First I thought fans were not working...but they are. AC works so does the heater. Head Gasket was replaced at 172k miles when timing belt was done...so not sure what is going on..anyone with suggestions?

When the timing belt was changed, did the mechanic also replace the waterpump and thermostat ? Hopefully the waterpump isn't the original one...Open the radiator cap and start the engine, does the water/coolant circulate when at the normal temp ?

A few things to look for to indicate a faulty waterpump:

Open the hood and listen to the area of the pump for any bearing noise...Howling or grinding sound from the impellor of the pump.

Examine the ground under the engine compartment for any signs of leaking coolant from a bad waterpump seal. Look on the lower part of the engine block as well.

Double check that the water/coolant is reaching the heater core. Run the heater or defroster with the fan on to be sure.

If you can contact the shop that did the timing belt, ask them to verify that the pump was also replaced, as this is typicallly when it is done. Even though the coolant is circulating, I would want to know for sure.

Good Hunting !!
