Smile newbie with questions

I am a senior at Lewis and Clark College and have been living in the Portland area for 4 years. I am new to the forum thing and wanted to join in order to learn more about my '96 accord. I got it used from a family friend and it has a ton of miles on it. This is the first year that I have had to be completely responsible for all the car maintenance and have a lot of questions. I know pretty much nothing about my car but am very interested in learning. Any help would be awesome.

current question:
what exactly does the maintenance required light mean? how do i know what maintenance is actually required?
thanks in advance

Welcome!

The maintenance reqd. light is ONLY a reminder based on miles. It's not an actual measurement of anything functional.
Resetting it on earlier cars, there's a slot where you push a key, kinda like resetting a mechanical trip odometer. Later cars you press & hold the odometer reset button while you first turn on the car. I don't remember what year they changed between those 2 systems.

make sure you get an oil change every 3 months or 3000 miles.

Thanks for the responses.
Jim Blake, I appreciate the specificity and am relieved to know it is nothing fatal.

I am glad to know that nothing is wrong, but do know that it is time to change the oil (a very helpful tip).

I will be sure to post questions in the right thread next time. I actually read the New Member posts after I had posted, my mistake.
