Default Best Rt. thru Chicago

Shouting out to anyone from the Windy City and/or those who may be familiar with routing there.

We are planning a trip to Green Bay, WI this summer and even though I've traveled through Chicago a number of times in the past, I'm open to advice as to the best route to take to avoid traffic, tolls, etc.

Let's say we are starting from I-65 in Indiana then traveling north... take me through the City.

Thanks in advance

From NE Ohio I normally take the loop (I-94) through downtown. I'll catch some arguments about that. You're coming up I-65 so you get right into that mess.

I-65 through Indianapolis & Lafayette. That part is the same no matter how you get through Chicago.

I-94 through the loop (my favorite):
- Exit at I-80/I-94 westbound (you can do Google-maps).
- Follow I-94 when it splits away from I-80.
- No tolls until you get north of downtown.
- - NO tolls AT ALL if you stay on hwy-41 through Highland Park & Gurnee.
- Traffic sometimes slows to a crawl, so I just allow for that in my schedule.
- Even at 2am it might slow to a crawl...

Skyway (I-90):
- Stay on I-65 to the north end where it empties into I-90.
- Tolls for no good reason except you get up on a big bridge for a nice view of the steel mills & Chicago harbor.
- You still end up downtown on I-94 through the loop.

I-294 bypass:
- Exit at I-80/I-94 westbound.
- Stay on I-80 don't exit onto I-94.
- Follow I-294 bypass around Chicago.
- Tolls tolls & more tolls.
- Chicago has grown out around I-294 so it's not really an outer bypass any more.
- Extra 25 miles or so.

Thanks, Jim

Yes, I'm familiar with all three routes you've described and your description is accurate. True, I-94 can be a bear at nearly anytime day or night

I've taken the I-294 in the past and if I recall correctly, the total toll was something like $20. Does that sound correct to you? At the time there were sections under construction and traffic moved... then slowed to a craw... then move again... then a craw.. and so on

Bottom line is: there's simply not a good way to get through the Windy
