Default Just had to vent

On about Sat. July 15 our 30-year-old refirgerator failed. Because we had gone away for a couple of days, other than what we could eat immediately, we lost most of the food in it.

Against my deep-seatedbetter judgement, rather than get the old unit repaired,we decided to buy a new refrigerator.

On July 21, 07 our brand new $1300Whirlpool lower-freezer-drawer refrigerator was delivered.

This moring my wife and I decided tohave breakfast and when I pulled out the lower freezer drawer, almost all of the food in it was thawed. A bunch of water rolled out on our hard wood floor, too. Imagine our surprise at the behavior of our new refrigerator.

I called the Whirlpool service number and they're going to send someone out, but only "within 24 to 48 hours".

I sense that this new refrigerator looks a lot better than it behaves, and we are in for acompletely different, "modern"experience in refrigerator ownership.

I now fully realize that we should have gotten the old unit repaired. If the service person does not completely satisfy us, I'm going to try to get a refund from the very-large, customer-oriented retailer from whom we bought it. If I'm successful, we'll then hunt for an old refrigerator, identical to our previous one, through the Bargainfinder and then, if necessary, get it repaired.

Are today's cars as bad as today's refrigerators?

It was probably just something simple. I am sure over time you'll like your new fancy fridge more than your old one. Plus it will be saving you money, energy wise.

Was the hardwood floor damaged? Depending on what/who is responsible for the freezer malfunction, you may have a claim against someone for the floor damage.

my parents bought a new oven last fall.

it came without a heating element in it. they were originally told they would hvae to wait 4-6 weeks to get one...after my involvement, one was installed the next day. i think they took it out of some one else's oven.

I've got an old dryer that sucks down power like nobody's business but it's so simple I'm almost afraid to get rid of it.... I miss the fact that old stuff can be repaired so easily, It was my parents and it squeeked. I bought a belt and a new tensioner for like $15.00, popped a few screws out, slid on the new belt, inserted the new tensioner and haven't had an issue since. I wonder why manufacturers are making this stuff so hard to work on these days....

Well, supposedly the service person is going to come by today, and that's a good thing.

Because we were able to get a big bath towel under the drawer right off the bat, there is no damage to our hardwood floor. That's another good thing.

Something else that's a mixed blessing - about two hours after we removed all of the frozen food from the drawer (and transferred as much as we could to a small untility freezer that we have in our basement) the fridge and freezer began working again. Now the temperature in the freezer is about +2F - right where it probably should be.

I told my wife that we're going to look like a couple of idiots in front of the service guy, but she says that she's happy the guy is going to come by anyway. She said "we're not going to go through that every morning", and I guess she's absolutely right, but, just like with an automobile, it's probablygoing to be difficult for the service person to diagnose a problem on a unit that appears to be functioning normally.

We'll see what the service guy says. Since our unit is probably identical to a million others, maybe he will have heard all this before - and he'llknow what to do so that this doesn't happen again.

nasty, you reminded me of another thing.

On the recommendation of our daughter, about seven years ago we got rid of a perfectly-functioning Inglis top-loading washer and front-loading dryer and bought a Maytag Neptune washer and dryer. We paid something like $1700 for the pair.

What a mistake.

The dryer has operated well, but the washer has been nothing but a nightmare. I've done some searching on the internet about the Neptune washer and we're not alone. There's been a class action suit and settlement in the States and, lucky us, Maytag in Canada decided to fix Canadians' washers gratis.

The next time that theNeptune needs anything that is not covered by warranty, it will be taking a one-waytrip to the dump, it'll be Back to the Future and I'll try like hell to find another Inglis set that is identical to the one we foolishly got rid of.

I have a thought about the freezer "working" again. Do you think it is cooling back to where it should be because there is nothing in it? If there is food in therethen it has toworkharderto keep it at the proper temperature. I don't know if that makes any sense. If it does, maybe it would be worth bringing up to the repairman.
I have a whirlpool fridge that is only about 9 months old. It has one of those door ice dispensers on it (I always wanted one of those since I was a kid). Best Buy 18 months same as cash withno interest rocks[sm=icon_rock.gif]! Anyways, for the longest time, the door ice dispenser would only spit out crushed ice. Since I don't like my ice to melt right away, I was quite disturbed about this. I hate calling repair men or "help hotlines"with a problem so simple. So, last night I took out the ice dispensing drawer thingy to try to figure out what the problem was (there wasn't anything good on TV.) After it thawed I was able to see how the thing worked (it's actually quite simple.) Anyway, when I put the drawer thingy back in, voila! cubed ice again! Apparently some crushed ice got caught in the works and froze the thing up. If I hadn't taken it out to thaw, I bet I would have had a totally non-working ice dispenser. Just my 2 cents on "new" things not working right. My parents had a kenmore fridge that was older than me that died in 2005. I think it was about 25 at the time. I looked for a Kenmore first, but thenI figured the quality on new items is probably pretty similar nowadays.

Well, no service visit yesterday. "Maybe today".

I should have loaded the freezer last night to see if that madea differnece, but my wife said "I'm not losing any more food".

The back of our fridge is completely covered with the outside case - not even coils visible. I think appliances are made more difficult to work on nowadays precisely because of what nasty said about how easy it was to fix his dryer.

Cars are pretty much the same thing. Look at how difficult it is to replace the blower motor or the timing belts compared to the way it used to be. On my 81 Chev V8, I replaced the heater core from under the hood in about twenty minutes. Water pump, about the same.
