Angry Secret Accord recall

Took my 2009 EX-L to the dealer for a clutch-burning smell. Good thing I did!
Turns out I need a new clutch ($2400.). They told me they checked the oil, even though I had the oil changed 1600 mi. ago.

Turns out that all Accords have a "secret ring job recall", where the dealer checks your oil level every time you bring the car in. If the car is burning too much oil (mine was down 2 & 3/4 qt.), and you have less than 125k mi., you get a free ring job, ($4500.) courtesy of the manufacturer.

This info is kept secret from Accord owners; we never received a letter, and the dealer never mentioned they were checking our oil consumption. If I had used a local mechanic instead of the dealer for my Accord maintenance, I would have never known about this defective ring problem, and possibly seized the engine.

A great example of untrustworthy and devious behavior by Honda.

We are lifetime loyal Honda buyers; time for a Suburu?

There was a warranty extension, with letters mailed out.

I read and read the threads but didn't see what years are affected by this oil burning issue. We have a 2012, do we need to worry?

American Honda extended the warranty coverage on the Piston Rings and Pistons for 2008-11 Accord L4 to 8 years from the original date of purchase or 125,000 miles, whichever comes first.

The warranty extension does not apply to any vehicle that has ever been declared a total loss or sold for salvage by a financial institution or insurer, or has a branded, or similar title under any state’s law. To check for vehicle eligibility, a VIN status inquiry is done.

Thanks, Redbull. Since we have a 2012, we will not worry. I did check the oil yesterday and found that nearly 2000 miles since last oil change it's still full.

Just a little personal rant here, so take it for what it's worth...

With cars having longer and longer oil-change intervals, we still have to check the dipstick for oil level. The oil-life monitor, and the long interval schedules, don't do anything about leaking or burning oil.

So keep checking your oil level. It gives you an excuse to open the hood & notice other things/problems going on in there.

Probably why BMW led the industry with the ability to check the oil level from the vehicle information center. I haven't looked into it, but it's been something like ten years now since BMWs system was released; I wonder how many other companies have adopted this method of checking oil level.

My Saabs have oil-level sensors. I discovered that by turning on the key to reset the oil-life monitor while the oil was draining out. But you can't just display the level from the SID.
