Stuck on the train, surrounded by ignorance...
Soooo, fun little two hours I had on the CTA Blue Line (Subway train, Chicago) today. Train stops and we are stopped for about 10 minutes when an announcement comes on saying that the train ahead is having mechanical problems. At 15 minutes, the conductors voice comes on saying that the rail cracked and they are attempting to fix it. At 20 minutes, we are moved on the south bound track and are ready to depart, but keep the doors open for people filing on and the conductor (who stepped off the train momentarily) to get back on.
As the conductor gets back on, this african american woman begins to yell "Are we going express to O'hare?" Another chimes in "Yea, I got a job to get at.." Soon the sound of tooth sucking fills the air as the train just came from the South Side. They start ranting about CTA this, fix the rail that, blah blah blah getting the agreement of most of the train (White, Black, Hispanic- from upper to lower class seeing as the train got stuck under Downtown). The conductor avoids answering the question and locks himself in his cabin, soon announcing that the train will be making all stops to O'hare.
There the black ladies have had it, "The CTA betta give me this, missin work cause them", "Man, this etc. etc. etc. I suppose these old school women didn't understand that the rail being cracked posed a danger to the safety of the train. Or, for that matter, that it was impossible for the train to even travel on it. They supposed it was some sort of fault the CTA could have prevented. Oh, no, CTA you you caused all of these problems.
I laugh at this because these people have been riding the CTA for probably more than 20 years of their lives.. if this hurt their lives SO much they can walk, take six busses, spend $50 on a cab, or drive in two hours of traffic to get to their job if it's such a problem. Almost six years of riding the train and I've only been caughtlike that once.
