My 91 Mustang is a convertible. Yeah you would be surprised at how heavy even the "soft" top is. They are about 200lbs heavier than the hard tops. IMO it would be stupid to try to race one unless you gutted it and added a roll cage. Plus tracks won't let you race without a roll cage. The 87-93 Model 5.0 convertibles are actually selling for less because of it. Kind of ironic how if you bought a convertible brand new it is extra $.
I would never buy another convertible. I bought the Mustang when I was 17 (it had to replace my 90 GT 5spd.) When you ride with the top down in high school though it kind of is a chick magnet. Then in college I rarely ever took it down. Plus it leaks.
The 87-93 Mustang 5.0 LX "notchback" coupes are the best for racing. They weigh less than 3037 lbs. An 03/04 cobra weighs 3780lbs.

I bet that Mustang driver wanted to commit suicide after this too. Not only did he lose to an import - usually an unforgiveable sin with American car buffs - he lost on National TV. Sucks to be him [sm=laughat.gif]

and you could by an 89 Civic CRX Hatchback, spend half the money, and run 9's all day...
If it were my money, I would rather have an 03/04 Cobra.. only stating a preference. Not saying it's be all end all, don't want to come off like a LS1 guy.

 

Not a chance. The 5.0's are so popular cause they are so cheap. You would spend twice as much getting a CRX to run 9's than you would getting a 5.0 to run 9's.

IMO the 94-98 Cobras were the best looking Mustangs. I do like the 2005 and newer models too. If I had one I would totally de-badge it and remove the stock spoiler. Kind of like the fastback Steve McQueen drove in the movie Bullet(or was it Bullit?) Except mine would be black, not green.

 

but it's more of an accomplishment for a FWD 4 cylinder import to be running 9's!
especially when it includes beating domestics

Amen... I respect each of the different types of vehicles that they have their own plusses... personally I like low-end torque and a loud grumbly engine, but I enjoy the gas mileage and the topend pull of my vtak 3.0 engine... and I'm starting to enjoy the sound of whooshing air in the engine Gotta get an intake and a good exhaust and make this thing sound better.. I'd love if it sounded like a G35.

And x2 on the if its fast and looks good... Supras, Trans Ams, Turbo AWD Hatchbacks, Mustangs.. they all get love from me
