Default Is it the rack and pinion?

I'm unsure what part of the forum this falls into so i put it here.

When i start out driving my car feels fine but once i hit 40 my steering wheel starts shaking uncontrollably. Also when i turn corners i hear a clicking noise. My friend who is a mechanic said it is my rack and pinion. He moved out of state to work for a porsche dealership and i don't know his number so i turned to you guys. Have any of you had this problem? if so what was the cause/solution to the problem?

Get an alignment first, have them check your ball joints and CV boots.

That all depends on who does the work. I would whip out the phone book and call around for some quotes. Post the amounts quoted here andsomeone will tell you if it is a good deal or not.
The clicking sounds like the CV axles - the same thing was happening on "the money pit" about a year ago and it was the CV Axles.I also agree with the above posts for aditional items that could be causing this.
Also don't foget to check all the tires themselves. Once "the money pit" was wobbling and it turned out one of the tires had split the steel belts on one part of it and could have blown out at any time. I was lucky it didn't happen on the interstate doing 70.

Do not spend any money till you have the issue properly diagnosed,,
Align and cv boots will NOT cause the shaking , loose ball joints possibly,, ( tires, out of balance, )
But DIAGNOSE FIRST REPAIR AFTERWARD

Yeah the shaking in the money pit was solely due to the crappy tire. Once the CV Axles were replaced, the clicking was gone, but the shake was still there.
