Default Rack and pinion opinion

hey all, went to get my oil changed today and the tech said my driver side rack and pinion was leaking. He said it needed replacing which I found to cost $600-$1100 for everything. Can't I just use some stop leak in the power steering? or do I need to replace the whole unit? Thanks

it's a high pressure system so stop leak wouldn't hold it and may clog some passages, if you can't replace the hose/fittings that are leaking you very well may need to replace the whole unit to correct the issue.

Um yeah, replace the rack, when they start to leak it is because the seals are bad... stop leak would ruine the pump as well as not fix the issue. A new rack is about 500 after the core at any autoshop. You should go ahead and replace your tierod ends as well, there about 60 for each side, and it only takes a couple of hours to do your self.

Good luck
