NO 55's are NOT wider
both tires are 205 mm wide
your new tires are 55% as tall as they are wide
your old tires were 60% as tall as thay are wide
What you have now is a smaller overall diameter tire and more wheel gap.
To get what you WERE going for you should have bought 215/55 tires not 205/55
