It may or may not have to do with how you clean the wheels or if something from the road got on them.
How do you clean the wheels and with what?
How do you clean the wheels and with what?
- Do you wash the car and wheels right after it's been driving, while the wheels are still hot?
- Do you use any wheel cleaner? If yes, what brand, type? Most common store bought brands have acid. There are also different type for different wheels. Store bought common cleaners does work reasonable well, as long as you don't let them sit long. Better and more expensive wheel cleaner (usually not in regular brick and mortar department stores) may be ph balanced and acid free, etc.
- Do you use a sponge, brush, etc. Some of the best brushes that don't scratch are made from boars hair. Although cheaper brushes are usually not the cause of peeling, it may cause fine scratches. Woolies also work well.
- Other info. to describe your process?

Mine were thick clear-coat over polished aluminum. I think newer wheels might be painted??
Anyway, those wheels were peeling from stone-chips. Once a stone-chip gets through and exposes bare metal, then corrosion creeps underneath the surrounding coating. That's not really a "defect" but rather some designer decided that clear-coated polished metal was "the look" that they required. They look nice if you never drive the car out in the real world.
