Default 2018 Accord LX: can I install a Sport radio unit in my LX for CarPlay?

Hi everyone, we have a 2018 Accord LX, which does not have CarPlay available, and I want to install CarPlay on it.

The goal: install CarPlay while keeping the same style of radio display and keeping access to system options via the display.

In order to avoid aftermarket options, which would end up changing the way the car looks and also remove access to the system control setting that are currently available via the display, I’d like to see if it would be possible to swap out the entire head unit, display and control unit, for a 2018 Sport part, in order to install CarPlay.

I am aware the wiring harness would then be different, but if I have the display, control unit, and manage to get ahold of a Sport wiring harness, could they all be changed out? Or can they be made to work?

I’m assuming this will depend on the car-to-control wires being compatible LX-Sport, so the control-to-radio wires would then match each other Sport-Sport.

The questions:
  • Is this something that is fundamentally incompatible?
  • Is this something that is niche and complicated, but possible?
  • Would this require a separate GPS unit?
  • Is there a difference in the number of speakers between the Sport and the LX? Will this cause any issues?
  • Are there other fundamental differences between the Sport and LX that might cause issues?
  • Are there differences in features and menus controlled by the radio unit?
If possible, how could I go about doing this?
  • is this something that a dedicated car audio professional would be able to handle and rewire? If so, what would the process be?
  • What specific things should I say when calling places should I ask to make sure they can make this work?
  • Is this something that can be rewired DIY?
  • Is this something that cannot be rewired at all, and I will have to rely on a compatible aftermarket part?

I’m really curious to see if this is possible, and really appreciate y’all’s time in reading all of this!

”dude, why are you making this so complicated?”

The reason I am trying to go this route, instead of simply installing an aftermarket CarPlay unit, is that my wife would like to have CarPlay, but it’s not a priority for her. For this kind of thing, where she would enjoy doing it but is fine without it I like to minimize the impact it has on her during the change period. We have also had issues with the tire pressure sensors, which is why we want to keep the system settings in the display.
