1992 Accord - Engine Questions/Problems
Hey everybody, just found your forum here, looks like a great resource!
I picked up a 1992 accord EX with 92,000 miles a few weeks ago for $1000. The motor had a tick, but I bought it anyway because it was cheap and the body is in really good shape. I took the car to the honda repair shop today and the mechanic says he thinks it's a rod causing the noise from the engine, and said he thought he could even "feel" the rod knocking inside the motor.
His advice to me was to drive it easy, keep the coolant filled up, and just drive until the thing dies. I've replaced engines in a few vehicles and have access to a decent shop. What are my options as far as reparing my motor or replacing it? I'd like to keep it optimized for gas-mileage. Thanks for any info!!

Drive it as long as possible while you save money, then i'd say to install one of those low miles japanese engines.. they usually come with 40-45k miles on them ,, I have installed a bunch of them, have had no problem at all .. I reccomend to install a new t-belt and water pump,
it would be a bit cheaper to get one form a salvage yard but then it would have high mileage for that old of a car ..
if interested on a low miles engine let me know, i will give you the phone # ..

if it truly is a rod tick then you could either do a rebuild or just buy a used take-off engine. Either way if you don't do the labor yourself it's going to cost about the same. If you can do your own work then a rebuild will be a lot cheaper but it will cause you to have a bit more down time.
