Default 1996 accord question

I've got two questions about my 1996 accord. I've got a 1996 accord, 4 cylinder.

First, whenever I turn on my A/C there is a whine in the engine somewhere. The whine follows the sound of the car accelerating. Has anyone ever had this problem? Anyone know what it could possibly be?

Second, the car is automatic and whenever the car shifts say going up a hill around 20 or 40 mph, there is a loud rattling under the car. Any one know what could possibly be the problem with that?

I appreciate all the help.
Thanks

The whine could be from the belt.

When you say "under the car" I assume you mean not from the engine area???? Check the heat shields around the cat.

In my experience some compressors whine under load more than others. Not sure why. I replaced compressor on my son's 97 Acura TL thinking the compressor was failing. However, replacement compressor made exact same noise. It's still running/cooling fine 2 years later.

Check the belt for reasonable tightness (1/2" deflection on longest span)and w/ belt removed turn compressor by hand. It should turn easily w/ slightly periodic resistance (piston compressions) but no grating or hard spots to turn through. If you feel any grating, the clutch plate bearing may be causing the whining.

Clutch beaing can be replaced w/o discharging system. Remove PS and Alternator, and remove compressor mount bolts to allow access to compressor face. A 10mm socket and air impact will remove the clutch retaining bolt, or special restraint tool or strap wrench on pulley.

good luck
