Default Engine swap for MPG question

Hi there, new to the forum and Honda. I have a 1994 Accord EX with I believe the F22b1 4 cyl VTEC engine and an automatic transmission. The oil pump failed and took out the motor unfortunately, before I get safely pull off the highway. So I am going to replace it the engine and do a few other repairs while i'm there.

My question is this... I'm already getting 32mpg - which is pretty good, but since I'm replacing the engine, I'm wondering is there another engine I could use that would give me better mileage? I drive 50,000 miles a year and if I can get a few more mpg without allot of headache - why not!

So, any suggestions? Thanks!

32 mpg is great for the F22B1 with AT. I don't believe you will find another engine to swap in that will give you better fuel economy and be cost/beneficial.

A manual transmission generally gets better gas mileage than an automatic though.
