Default High RPMs when shifting to 2nd gear

Concerning a 96 model lx...before my transmission shifts into 2nd gear, the RPMs will go well over 3000 before it shifts into 2nd. All of the other gears are fine. When I slow down the RPMs will surge again after I accelerate. Could it be electrical because when I disconnect the battery, the problem will go away for a couple days or so then will resume. Thanks for any tips.

There are some trans codes which don't set the D4 light blinking.

Get Obd2 scanner and check for codes or short service check connector and get obd1 codes.

DIY forum has procedure for extracting obd1 codes. Same as ECU codes, but D4 light will blink rather than Check Engine Light.

good luck
