Default stuttered start

My 1993 honda accord was having like a sputtered start and wouldnt turn over until i let it rest for about 10 or so minutes and then i started and turned it off about 3 times and it started with no problem. maybe thats because i allowed it a resting period im not sure. Anyways i would love to hear some feedback on what you guys think and what some solutions are. thank you.

I'd start with the normal tune-up things.

How many miles on the car?
How old are the spark plugs?
How old are the distributor cap & wires?
Fuel filter? Air filter?

180k on the car and engine, not sure how old the spark plugs are and not sure how to check for that. also do not know those either. my friend gave me this car as he departed for a tour in the military. so unsure of those stats and cannot contact him.

Spark plugs are not too expensive, and they're a periodic "tune-up" item. As much as I don't like to blindly throw parts at a problem, fresh tune-up stuff might be the exception.

Check the cap & wires like this...
1 - Engine completely cold. Completely dark outside & turn off all lights.
2 - Open hood, have someone try to start the engine in the dark.
3 - Look for any sign of arcing around plug wires & dist.cap - even a blue glow.
4 - Any arcing or glowing means the power for your spark is "leaking out".
(OK if you're an electrical guy, what that means is the insulation is beginning to break down)

Air filter - open the filter box & look at it. Is it all full of crud, leaves, insects, small animals??

I've heard stories about Honda's getting along best with NGK or Denso spark plugs - better than other brands.
