Default Switching to Synthetic

I'm approaching 160k miles. Up to this point, my local Honda dealer handled oil changes. For under $25 they even washed it and fully inspected it.

But i'm tiring of having to make appointments a week out. So i'm going to start doing them myself. And this means buying oil.

I've heard Honda used Mobil up until recently, though that is not verified.

I lurked on a few forums discussing oil. 5W20 is what my J30A1 calls for. I've read discussions regarding that lower viscosity oils are used to improve fuel economy and with tighter tolerances they are fine - but as the engine wears a thicker oil is preferred.

I have gone through 6 full tanks lately, averaging 25-26 mpg. i'm going to try Mobil 1 5W30. we'll see what mileage losses i incur.

share what you use!

for my DD I use what's ever on sale. Mobil, Castrol ect are all find for everyday driving. For my few turbo set up's and my performance engines I ran Royal Purple because it really dose save on friction and the wear and tear on your bearings. But for your DD J series I would run HIGH MILLE Castrol. It's good stuff. Helps keep your seals fresh and its tad bit thicker oil.

I normally use Castrol GTX on the Hondas. Weight depending on which car, over the years... 5w-20 on the current Civics and the previous 2003 Accord. (5w-30 for the 95 Integra) I've used MotorCraft semi-syn 5w-20 a couple times in the Civics with not ill-affects. I've had used-oil analyzed after the oil-life monitor says 10% and that has given me confidence in the long oil-change intervals that the oil-life monitor calls for.

I gotta use Mobil-1 0w-40 on the Saabs because it meets GM-LL-025-A spec. for the oil-life monitors in those cars.

I have run mobil 1 in all of my cars and had good results. For the record wal-mart has oil for much cheaper than the auto parts stores, but they usually only have junk filters.

I got a 5 Qt Mobil 1 jug for $30 on sale at O'Rielly's. Mobile 1 filter was $15.

Mobil 1 includes similar seal conditioners as high mileage conventional oils. Which is why I felt ok with it.

I have read good things about Castro GTX as well.

Walmart has the same oil for $4 less.

I also recommend getting an oil filter removal cap - that fits on a 3/8" extension. makes removing the filter easy. access to the filter is very easy in the J30A1.
