Default Transmission slip

Hi guys: I´m new in the forum, and i really appreciate if you can help me with the following question.
I´ve a honda accord 99 ex a/t 4cyl , the transmission slip from first to second speed and after that it´s pretty smooth, i took the car to transmissions garage but mechanic wants to make overhaul rightaway, but i heard if solenoid are in failure that can be a reason for slip. What can i do before i rebuilt it?
Thank you

The transmission are known to fail.

I'd say to sell the car asap before it goes completely.
