I have been argueing with my dad on this question...everytime he drives any car, he likes to reverse and then quickly put the car into drive while the car is still reversing...he says that this is perfectly fine for the car...i dont argree, does anyone know if this can cause harm to the transmission?

Quick answer: regardless of what you drive it puts added strain on the car since you're now using your tranny/engine to stop the car from going backwards and start going forwards, at the very least it strains multiple components and will decrease their life span....

This reminds me of the whole "use the clutch to slow down" argument. Some people say it's "better" for the car (on a manual) to down-shift and let the car slow itself. My fathers reply and my opinion on this have always been the same: What's cheaper and easier to replace, a clutch or brake pads?

just explain to him that it a simply law of physics and motion. Ask him this, if the car is rolling backwards and he shifts to drive before it stops rolling then what part of the car is stopping it from going backwards? It's obviously not the brakes, which are the only part on a car that is designed SPECIFICALLY for stopping the car.

Is it going to kill the car at speeds that low? Probably not, but it's not going to help anything either, I'd say your motor mounts take the most shock from it....

get a wooden ruler, when you see him do that....just as he is shifting to drive, smack his knuckles with the ruler and Yell "BAD DAD" ![sm=yikesomg.gif]

Ask, what's cheaper; brakepads or transmission and motor mounts?
When the friction discs in the 1st gearclutch pak wear out, it will cost around $1200 to rebuild the trans.

If he gives ya any lip send him to his room with no supper.

doing this ina honda is a BIG no no.

honda auto trannys are like manual trannys with clutch packs. there is a lever than bends when you do this, and if you do it enough it will cause a banging into the reverse and eventually no reverse.

well i have explained to him many times but he just wont listen...he has a 911 that has tiptronic on it...so i guess his car will begin to get the same treatment!
