Default 03 Accord EX - Noise @ 70 mph (2000 rpm)

My 03 Accord EX (for several years) has been making a quiet high pitch whine at about 70 mph (seems to be at exactly 2000 rpm). At any speed slightly slower or faster it goes away. Any ideas what this might be?

Try driving in a different gear.Does it happen at the same road speed or at the same RPM?

This only happens in the 70mph range. Actually, it is around 2,100-2,200 rpm, not 2,000. I didn't mention it above, but it's an automatic for what it's worth. In other gears, it does not make this whine noise.

To find out if it is a differential gear whine you can lightly step on the brake [loads the diff] and see if the noise changes.
Or to see if it might be a wheel bearing steer lightly side to side, check for noise change.
How many miles on this 'creampuff'?

Are you sure the stereo won't drown out the noise? [sm=icon_rofl.gif]I crack ME up sometimes.

It has about 71,000 miles. It was my wife's for 5 years until she got her Odyssey. Now, I drive it to work 50% of the time. She say's it has always done it basically from day one. Nice to juist find out about it.

The whine is just the right pitch/frequency that the radio has to be VERY loud to drown it out. My current solution is to never drive 70 mph, but I am concerned that it may develop into a real problem.

I'll check the diff and steering, and post my findings. Thanks.

I should also have mentioned that it only whines shen your on the gas pedal. If you let off of the gas, it stops, but as soon as you step on it again, it starts back.

I tried all the suggestions above, and:

1. In a different gear doesn't make a difference. At the same RPM in "D3" no whine. In "D" at 50mph & 2,100 rpm still no whine.

2. In "D3" at ~70mph also no whine.

3. As stated above, the whine is only at the ~70mph ~2,100rpm range and only during acceleration or cruising...not decelerating (foot off gas pedal).

4. While cruising at ~70mph with the whining, I lightly stepped on the brake....still whining.

5. I also steered side to side lightly .....and then somewhat aggressively (like a Nascar driver cleaning his tires).
