Actually it should be the clutch that sticking causing the belt to burn. I'm not there so I can't verify if it is actually the clutch that is the problem. Since you've never worked on an ac unit it could seem like a big job but it actually isn't. What you need to purchase is a compressor kit (compressor, expansion valve, pre-measured PAG 46 oil), O-ring kit, high and low side cores, and condenser (up to you depending on you do not know where the leak is). You can mix the dye with the oil before closing the system. If you change all on the list you have to replace the o-rings hence resealing then system. Once put back together you can do a vacuum test for 1hr to make sure your system is seal. If it holds put the correct amount I stated above and you should be good to go.

I'm assuming you are referring to high and low side cores? Also what tool do I need? Would you have a diagram of the complete list of parts?

 

I don't know about a list the 2 links is all you need to complete the job and the core valves attached.

 

Sorry my bad, somehow I thought the cores were some sort of rad in front of the fans. Long day. Anyhow I ordered all the stuff, went with rock auto as the compressor was new not a refurb. but ended up being about $100 more. Getting stuff to Canada is always tricky and if I ordered the two links you sent from ebay, it would be more things that could go wrong and shipping damaged or defective stuff back is astronomical. Rock auto returns and warranty are pretty good. I order a fair bit of stuff from them as it is less expensive than buying local even with the shipping. Would be nice to buy local but the prices have to be descent.

Cross your fingers that everything goes well. Not looking forward to getting at that compressor. I'm going to watch a few you tube videos first. I still have to figure how much oil and what to lube before installing. Sounds like I can mess things up with not enough or too much oil or Freon.

I also sent you that link because I have been doing a/c for years and I have not once gotten a bad unit from the company. I just assumed it was the safer bet for you price and quality wise.
