I have a 1990 honda acoord that has developed a problem in cold weather. It started last winter, went away when the weather got warm but now is coming back on cold days. The ignition key goes in fine and starts the car, but it is very hard to get the key out. I can turn the car off, but the key wont rotate al the way back to release. Another problem is with the shifter. This is less frequent but sometimes it gets stuck in park and the shifter button wont release the shifter. I am thinking the 2 issues are somhow related but I am baffeled as to how this only happens when it is cold. If i drive the car for a long drive so it gets very warm inside the car the key comes out no problem? Anyone else heard of or experinced this problem?
Something is wrong with the interlock system. It is designed to not allow you to remove the key until the car is in park.
There are several components that could cause a problem. Download a 91 shop manual via the online manuals link in the diy section. It will have the proper diagnostic procedures.
