Unhappy 1992 EXR "Clank" sound when releasing brakes

Hey guys,

I just bought a 1992 EXR and am loving it. It's been garage kept and pretty much babied, so it's in terrific shape. I parked it today in my driveway and upon releasing the brakes, I heard a loud clank sound from the left side. I searched the forums and some people report this, but there has been no resolution so far.

My bro says it's the cable, but that doesn't help much. The previous owner says he just did the breaks (I believe new pads). The car drives normally and aside from hearing the clank whenever I depress the brakes, it operates normally.

Hoping someone has had this problem and solved it.

Cheers

Sounds like you mean the main brakes, not the handbrake? Does it happen when pressing the pedal? When releasing the pedal?

Does it happen with the handbrake also?

Thanks for the reply JimBrake.

I actually discovered what the problem is upon installing my stereo—totally by accident. I had to remove the centre console and found that a small golden box that sits on the right (passenger side) of the shifter is the culprit. Pretty sure it's the cable. What happens is when pressing the brake, the small 90 degree mechanism attached to the box pushes forward. When depressing the brake, the little arm pulls out and hits the plastic guard that is put there to limit the movement. So you get a pretty loud sound (steal on abs plastic).

I noticed that sometimes the arm moves in and out (that's what she said, ha) but sometimes it doesn't and is always open (or pulled back). I'm not a 100% sure why it sticks, but in those cases there is no sound. I can't imagine the part being too expensive, but at least I know what it is.

OK, up near the gearshift lever. That's the shift interlock. It's supposed to allow you to shift out of park ONLY when you're pressing the brake.

Ah. Right on! Thanks for letting me know what part and its function. I checked and it doesn't do anything other than sound loud. I'll go to Honda today and see how much a new one is. Hopefully it's cheap. It looks easy enough to replace.

Thanks again
