Default 1995 EX Turn Signal Issue: Take time to "Warm Up"

I have searched a bit via the forum tool and via Google and haven't had much luck 100% diagnosing the issue, but It seems like it is either the relay or possibly the switch. Here's the deal:

When I get into the car after it has been sitting a while (like more than a day. I don't drive often, maybe 1 time a week on average), the turn signals act very strangely. Sometimes, it will take a while of running the car and driving around until the turn signals work properly.

First, it started with the right signal being intermittent. It would take a while to start working. If I drove around a bit though, it would eventually come back. I thought it was a flasher/turn signal relay issue so I went to the auto parts store and bought a new one (I know, should have gone OEM. I'll get to that part).

Swapped in the part from O'Reilly and it worked well for a bit. Then the issue came back with the right turn signal. This time however, if I put on the right turn signal, it would buzz for a bit, like the normal click but just a continuous sound. Then it would go really fast, then it would work. However, every time would park the car for a while, I'd go through this again.

Reading up that the non-OEM flasher/relays are junk, I tried to swap the old one back in. I opened it up and nothing looked fried so I gave it a go. It worked great for a day or two and then the problem came back. Now, however, it takes a "warm up" to get them working at all.

The hazards work perfectly fine during all of this if it matters.

So, any ideas on what is causing this? Should I just plop down the $45 the dealer wants for a relay and see if that fixes it? Thanks in advance!

Can you describe what you mean by the turn signals acting strangely? Does the turn signal flash quickly? Is the problem happening on one side or both?

It is important that the hazard lights work without a problem, because your turn signal/hazard relay is working properly. Don't waste you money on another relay.

Sorry, I thought I did, but it is weird issue that is tough to explain.

For the most part, when I start the car, the right signal doesn't work at all right away. After driving a bit it will start to work. This is usually preceded by it blinking fast for a few seconds, then it works fine until I part it for a day or 2. This is with the OEM relay.

With the parts store relay it does the same thing except for instead of the fast blinking before it works, it makes a long sustained buzz, then the signal works fine like above

Finally, since I have gone back to OEM, now the both left and right signals have a warm up time though the left doesn't have the fast/buzz issue the right does.

Go to the common DIY thread on top of the gen tech help forum. Open the online shop manuals link. The hondatech link has a 94 shop manual you can download.

In the electrical section, there is a wire harness and ground locations starting on page 23-14. You want to find G201 and G301. I unbolted the ground and cleaned up the rust using a wire brush where the bolt went through the bracket. You may have to remove the lower plastic splash shied to access.

You shouldn't throw parts at the car. The next two culprits could be the hazard switch or the combination switch for the turn signal. You should do some electrical testing. Do you have a volt meter?

Excellent, thanks for the help. I'll try to dig into it tonight and check it out.

I don't have a volt meter, but I can get one easy enough.

I'll report back.
